This stunning cathedral has been a fully functioning and thriving church for well over 1000 years, so any history fan will love to take a tour of York Minster and discover its incredibly exquisite handcrafted details and an unrivalled collection of medieval stained glass.

Tickets cost £16 per adult or £14 per student. Under 18s go free with an accompanying adult.

Explore impressive ruins on this beautiful estate in Wharfedale. Bolton Abbey takes its name from the ruins of the 12th century Augustinian monastery now known as Bolton Priory, which closed in the 1539 Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by King Henry VIII.

Today, this stunning 33,000 acre estate is a fantastic place for a day out with all the family, featuring attractive walking routes, plenty of spots for a picnic, Grade I listed buildings and a variety of businesses from tearooms to bookshops.

Parking at Bolton Abbey costs £15 for the day, or £12.50 if you book in advance.

Activities at North Yorkshire libraries

Libraries across the county will be celebrating the coronation by promoting the coronation themes of youth, community, diversity and sustainability.

If you're looking for things to do during the week, The Friends of Knaresborough Library will be holding a coronation coffee morning on Wednesday 3rd May from 10am to 12pm (the perfect excuse for a day out in beautiful Knaresborough!)

Starbeck Community Library will be hosting a coronation afternoon tea, with lots of fun for children including royal stories and crafts, on Friday 5th May after school.

Flower Display at Montpellier Hill

The parks team at Montpellier Hill in Harrogate will be creating a beautiful flower display of the royal cypher, using a technique called 'carpet bedding’ which is considered to be the most intensive form of bedding, using plants in a compact way and tightly knitted that the result looks like a woven carpet.

This display will be at Montellier Hill for 12 months, so don't worry if you miss it on the weekend!

Valley gardens harrogate

Parks and environmental services will be hosting a three-day party in Valley Gardens from Saturday 6th to Monday 8th May.

Come along to The Big Coronation Celebration for family friendly entertainment, free fairground rides and an artisan market. There will also be a big screen in the park broadcasting the coronation live.

Thirsk Yarnbombers

Locals and visitors to Thirsk and Ripon will see the towns decorated with coronation themed knitting!

The Thirsk Yarnbombers have become famous for their celebratory knits publicly displayed across the town since the Tour de Yorkshire in 2016, and they're ready to cover the town in their new King's Coronation creations!

Thirsk Yarnbombers meet every Monday at Hazel House behind the Workhouse Museum from 9.30am to 11.30am. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Newby Hall is a beautiful estate known for its 25 acres of award winning gardens, with lots to see and do and plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind.

Visitors can enjoy a coronation themed afternoon tea at Newby Hall and Gardens on Monday 8th May, and view the replica of Crown Jewels.

You'll find royal and coronation-themed events and activities all throughout May at Harewood House in Knaresborough, with special menus in the cafes and a street party atmosphere.

Visitors can also learn about the story of Harewood’s relationship to the historic coronation ceremony, with the Lascelles family coronation robes and other precious items from its historic collection on display.

Where to watch the coronation live

The coronation will be showing live on TV on Saturday 6th May, and across many major towns and cities in the UK there will be large screens installed for the public to watch together. You can find these nearby in:

  • City Park, Bradford
  • Piece Hall, Halifax

The BBC has also issued a TV licence fee waiver for the 6th and 7th of May, which means you can stream the coronation live on the BBC on TVs and screens at home and in public libraries without needing to pay for a TV licence.
